The primary cilium is a sensory organelle of non-cycling cells that controls differentiation and cell entry by dynamic accumulation of soluble signaling proteins. Dysfunction in this organelle is associated with a variety of pleiotropic genetic syndromes in humans. Dr. Lai's current research interests focus on exploring the mechanism of how signaling proteins enter and accumulate in the primary cilium. Our data suggest that folliculin (FLCN), a tumor suppressor protein is part of mechanosensory machinery in the primary cilium. Dr. Lai's study is aimed to determine how FLCN-mediated ciliary protein accumulation and the mechanism of FLCN in ciliary protein retention.
