"Reprogram microglia and macrophages toward functional improvement after stroke"

Yejie (Amy) Shi, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor
Department of Neurology, University of Pittsburgh

Microglia and macrophages are highly plastic cells and exert multifaceted roles in the brain after acute injury such as an ischemic stroke. We use high-throughput sequencing and single-cell analytic tools to elucidate stroke-induced transcriptomic changes in microglia and macrophages that shape their functions in the brain, and seek novel molecular regulators that can be targeted to modulate microglial/macrophage function to enhance resolution of brain inflammation and promote functional recovery after ischemic stroke.
